On the brink of the Open Studios of 2009 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, architect and former Prix de Rome winner John Lonsdale will visit De Verdieping for the Rijksakademie BeamClub on Wednesday the 25th of November.

On Thursday the 22nd of October John Lonsdale will give a talk called 'Hand to Earth' at the Nixon Hall, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Using his experience as an architect and teacher John Lonsdale will talk about ways of awakening an intuitive approach to designing and how, by working with both landscape and architecture, this can help in building bridges between the disciplines.

John Lonsdale is the 5th speaker for the RIBA Northern Region ‘Architects on Architecture’ lecture series, which is sponsored by Ibstock Brick Ltd and supported by both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.

So as to help stimulate ties between real estate, government and the creative sector Stichting Metropolis once again organized the 'Zee Event' held in Den Haag this year. John Lonsdale and Marlies van der Marel ran a workshop called 'Still Winds and Water'. Those taking part lead each other blindfolded to the sea so as to hear and feel the sea and the vast horizon before registering their thoughts and feelings as drawings in the wet sand.

As part of this year's eco-lifestyle festival SiteF27, held by Museum De Paviljoens in Almere, the artist Sarah van Sonsbeeck has captured stillness or silence in a one cubic metre glass box. Tijs Goldschmidt, Fred Woudenburg and John Lonsdale were asked by the artist to take part in a discussion moderated by the museum's curator Mascha Roesink. The evening was opened and rounded off with a 'Composition for Silence' by Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuyderveld).

John Lonsdale gave a talk on the 8th of April at the Kunsthal, Rotterdam. The talk called 'On the Interconnectedness of Things: Architecture and Landscape' followed lectures by the historian, Margeurite Tuijn and the curator of the Kunsthal, Jannet de Goede. Margeurite Tuijn spoke about the rich history of the Prix de Rome Art and Architecture prize and the changing fortunes of the discipline of Architecture as a category in the competition.

'Polder Commons' has been nominated for a prize in the open ideas competition 'DROOM Noord Holland'. The Province of Noord-Holland held the competition as part of their structure vision 2040 to find innovative spatial plans that respect the qualities of the landscape whilst addressing climate change and sustainability.

'Shifting Horizons, Towards a Non-Deterministic Urbanism' will be shown again at the Kunsthal, Rotterdam from Wednesday the 25th of February to the 1st of June as part of an exhibition called '200 Years Prix de Rome'. The show is a collaboration between the Kunsthal and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten under whose auspices the Prix de Rome is held.
